Moving into a new home is exciting and the urge to get settled in will be at the top of your to-do list. While it’s fine to unpack boxes and position furniture, you should give a little more thought and time to creating a style and decorating plan your home. Having a well thought out vision for how you want your home to look and feel will ensure that it reflects your style, taste and above all functions well for you and your family. Here are some tips to help you be thoughtful and deliberate about developing your personal design style!

VISUALIZE THE END RESULT—Visualize how you want you house to look and feel and use that imagery as a roadmap for decorating. If you are having problems defining your style, pull photos that spark your interest from home decor magazines or use Pinterest to create inspiration boards for every room in your house. As you look at each of the images, identify what it is about each photo that attracts you. Over time, as you look back at your collection of photos, you will see unifying themes and will have a better understanding of your likes and dislikes. Focusing on the elements that appeal to you will help you get to the heart of your design style.

DON’T RUSH DESIGN DECISIONS— Allow yourself a month or two to live in your house and understand how you and your family will use every room. This time will also give you a feel for how each room looks at different times of day and night. Once you’ve made a connection with your home, you’ll establish a strong sense of style and make the right design decisions in creating your dream home.

ONLY BUY THINGS TRULY LOVE—As the decorating process begins, make sure every new piece is something you truly love and will serve you and your family today and into the future. Decorating with pieces you love will help determine your own personal style and make your home feel like an expression of who you are.

PERSONALIZE YOUR DECOR—when it’s all said and done, the style of your decor should be a reflection of you and your family. There are three easy ways to personalize your decor: Paint and decorate with colors you love and colors that energize the spirit of your home. Accessorize your home with meaningful items and pieces that you truly love like family photos or pieces collected over the years. Decorate with functional pieces that will make living in your new home more enjoyable—good lighting, cozy blankets and pieces to help you stay organized. Once you’ve taken the time to think through and analyze your design style, you can confidently decorate every room in your home with style and flair!
